North Coast Day Trips
Stay in Sosúa or Cabarete a week and you'll quickly realize the best parts of the North Coast are spread along 100 km of coastline and inland mountains. Here are the day-trips that get you out of the resort orbit and into the rest of the region.
The North Coast has the densest concentration of legitimate day-trip excursions in the Dominican Republic. Within an hour of Sosúa or Cabarete you can be snorkeling on a remote sandbar, sliding down a chain of jungle waterfalls, kayaking through mangroves, or riding a cable car to a mountain summit. The catch is that not all of these are run equally — some operators are tourist mills and some are run by passionate locals. This guide breaks down the trips worth doing, where to base, and what each one actually involves once you've handed over the money.
The Big Three
Best Snorkel Day
Cayo Arena / Paradise Island
Where: A small sandbar in the reefs offshore from Punta Rucia, a fishing village on the far west of the North Coast.
Drive from base: About 1:45 from Sosúa, 2:00 from Cabarete, 1:15 from Puerto Plata. Most tours include the transfer.
Half- or full-day: Full day — pickup 7–7:30 AM, return 5–6 PM.
What's included: Speedboat from Punta Rucia, snorkel stop on the reef, time on the Cayo Arena sandbar, lunch (usually at a beach restaurant in Punta Rucia), an optional mangrove stop in some tours.
Cost: US$80–120 per adult depending on operator and group size.
Kid-friendly: Yes — the sandbar is waist-deep and calm. Speedboat ride is bumpy and the day is long.

Where: About 25 minutes inland from Puerto Plata, in the foothills of the Cordillera Septentrional.
Drive from base: 40 minutes from Sosúa, 50 from Cabarete, 30 from Puerto Plata.
Half- or full-day: Half-day (4–5 hours including transfer).
What you do: Hike up the river, jump and slide back down through a chain of natural waterslides. Choose the 7-falls (family option, about 1:30), 12-falls (intermediate), or 27-falls (full route, 4–5 hours, fitness required).
Cost: Park entry around US$20–30 depending on route; organized tours US$55–90 including transport.
Kid-friendly: 7-falls option from age 8–9. Not for younger kids or non-swimmers.
✓ Pros: The iconic North Coast adventure, helmets and life vests included, professional guides, real natural setting, great for active families and teens.
× Cons: The slides legitimately scare some people who back out, slick rocks mean falls are common, water levels and route availability change with rain, cell signal nonexistent.
The Cable Car
Pico Isabel de Torres + Summit
Where: Puerto Plata. The teleférico station is on the south edge of town.
Drive from base: 35 minutes from Sosúa, 45 from Cabarete.
Half- or full-day: Half-day (3–4 hours including the cable car ride and time at the summit).
What's there: The only aerial cable car in the Caribbean. The 800m summit has a botanical garden, a 16m Christ the Redeemer statue, a small café, and 360° views of the coast.
Cost: Around US$15 round trip; no organized tour really needed — you can DIY by taxi or rental car.
Kid-friendly: Yes — very accessible, no walking required beyond the gardens.
✓ Pros: Cheap, easy, the only such experience in the Caribbean, the view is genuinely incredible on a clear day, easy DIY with no tour required.
× Cons: Cancellations for wind are common, the summit is often shrouded in cloud (especially afternoons), lines on cruise days, the gardens are showing their age.
Beaches Worth the Drive
Best Beach in the DR
Playa Grande & Playa Preciosa
Where: Near Río San Juan, about 50 minutes east of Cabarete.
Drive from base: 1:00 from Sosúa, 0:50 from Cabarete.
Half- or full-day: Full beach day. Pack a cooler.
What's there: A long curved beach with golden sand, palm groves, a few seafood shacks, and an undeveloped feel. Playa Preciosa next door is the locals' choice — even less developed.
Cost: Free. Chair rental at Playa Grande RD$300–400. Lunch at the beach restaurants RD$600–1,000.
Kid-friendly: Mostly — the bay is calm at the protected end. Surf at the open end.

Boat Tour Through Mangroves
Laguna Gri-Gri (Río San Juan)
Where: Río San Juan town, on the same trip as Playa Grande.
Drive from base: 1:00 from Sosúa, 0:50 from Cabarete.
Half- or full-day: Half-day boat tour (2 hours on the water).
What's there: A short boat ride through a mangrove channel to coastal caves and a small natural pool. Combine with Playa Grande for a full day.
Cost: Public boat per-person around RD$500–700, or private charter US$50–80.
Kid-friendly: Yes — calm water, short distance, easy boarding.
✓ Pros: Easy and short, mangrove tunnels are genuinely beautiful, pairs perfectly with Playa Grande, supports local boatmen cooperative.
× Cons: Underwhelming on its own if you've done bigger mangrove tours elsewhere, narration is in Spanish only, boats are open sun.

Cabarete Hidden Gem
El Choco National Park Caves
Where: 10 minutes inland from Cabarete.
Drive from base: 10 from Cabarete, 25 from Sosúa.
Half- or full-day: Half-day. Combine with the Cabarete lagoon tour.
What you do: Guided walk through limestone caves with stalactites, freshwater pools you can swim in, and forest trails. Some tours add a horseback or ATV component.

What you do: Kayak or SUP through mangrove channels, often combined with bird-watching and an El Choco caves stop.

Animal Sanctuary + Zipline
Monkey Jungle Cabarete
Where: 15 minutes inland from Cabarete.
Drive from base: 15 from Cabarete, 30 from Sosúa.

What you do: Enter the squirrel-monkey enclosure where the rescued animals climb on you. Optional zipline circuit over the forest. Proceeds fund dental care for Dominican kids.

Brugal Rum Distillery Tour
Where: Puerto Plata industrial zone.
Drive from base: 30 from Sosúa, 40 from Cabarete.

What's there: A walking tour of the bottling and aging operations, ending with a tasting of Brugal's añejo lineup.
Cost: Around US$10–15. No advance booking required most days.

WWII History
Sosúa Jewish Museum (Museo Judio Sosúa)
Where: Calle Dr. Rosen in Sosúa, walkable from the beach.
Drive from base: Walking distance in Sosúa, 15 from Cabarete.
Half- or full-day: 1 hour.
What's there: A small but moving museum documenting the Jewish refugees Sosúa took in during WWII when most countries closed their borders, and the agricultural community they built. Tied to the small wooden synagogue next door.
Cost: Around US$5 entry.
Kid-friendly: Older kids (12+) interested in history.
✓ Pros: Tells a story most visitors don't know about Sosúa's origins, well-curated for its size, the synagogue next door is beautiful, easy to combine with a beach morning.
× Cons: Small — you'll spend an hour and you're done, opening hours can be inconsistent, not for young kids, parking on the side streets only.
Caribbean Amber
Amber Museum, Puerto Plata
Where: Downtown Puerto Plata, in a beautiful Victorian house.
Drive from base: 35 from Sosúa, 45 from Cabarete.
Half- or full-day: 1 hour + Old Town walk.
What's there: A small museum on Dominican amber (one of the world's best deposits) with a fossil insect collection. Ground-floor shop sells loose amber and finished jewelry.
Cost: Around US$3–5.
Kid-friendly: Yes — kids find the fossil insects in amber fascinating.
✓ Pros: Combines history, geology, and shopping, the Victorian building is itself worth seeing, easy add-on to a Puerto Plata Old Town walk, the “Jurassic Park” mosquito-in-amber moment is real.
× Cons: Small enough that you'll finish quickly, the shop downstairs is more of a destination than the museum upstairs, English captioning is inconsistent.
Beach Resorts & Day Passes
Day Pass Option
Cofresí Beach + Sun Village Area
Where: West of Puerto Plata, 30 minutes from Sosúa.
Drive from base: 30–40 from Sosúa/Cabarete.
Half- or full-day: Full day.
What's there: A protected horseshoe bay with shallow water, several resorts that sell day passes (Lifestyle / Sun Village offer the most common day pass), and Big Lee's beach bar.
Cost: Public beach free. Resort day pass US$50–100 per person depending on the day and resort.
Kid-friendly: Very — calm protected bay.
✓ Pros: Day pass gets you pools, multiple bars, all-inclusive food and drink, calm beach, and a break from being “outside” tourism for the day.
× Cons: Day pass quality varies wildly — some resorts oversell, parking on the public beach is limited, the area is touristy with timeshare pressure on the streets.
How to Book
Three booking patterns work well on the North Coast:
- Book direct with a known operator. Outback Adventures (Cabarete), Iguana Mama (Cabarete), Freestyle Catamarans, and the official Damajagua park office sell tours direct — better prices and better service than hotel-desk markups.
- Hotel concierge. Most hotels add a 15–25% markup but the convenience matters when you want a guaranteed pickup.
- DIY by rental car. Pico Isabel, Brugal, the museums, and Playa Grande are all easy to do on your own. Damajagua, Cayo Arena, and the lagoon tours are easier as organized trips.
Combining trips: Most North Coast day-trips combine well. Damajagua + Pico Isabel + Brugal makes a Puerto Plata day. Lagoon + El Choco + Monkey Jungle makes a Cabarete adventure day. Playa Grande + Laguna Gri-Gri makes an east-coast day. Cayo Arena is a full day on its own.
Avoiding cruise-day crowds: Cruise ships dock at Amber Cove (Puerto Plata) most days in season. Ocean World, Damajagua, Brugal, and the Amber Museum all see big crowds on cruise days. If you can plan around the cruise calendar (visible on the port's website), do.
